FacesIn 1991, these faces were painted from life. As people appeared in my daily path I wanted to record their presence. In spite of obvious physical differences we share the common experience of being human. How do our hopes, dreams and fears manifest? I considered exhibiting these with a looping soundtrack of personal stories each told while I painted them, without referencing anyone specifically. In 1999, on the heels of the Labyrinth drawings I began drawings of faces. Again, these are testimony to our common human experience. Colour, fiber and texture reflect the tapestry with which we conceal and reveal ourselves. Make-up and costume, sometimes perceived as shallow artifice, actually expose the individual, deeper life force within. These people are self-contained. They reflect a commitment to truth with dignity and courage. |
